Story / Episode 02

No Video, Just Memory

A quiet Japanese neighborhood street on an afternoon walk from the station.

I had just stepped off the train with my bags, walking the last stretch toward the room I booked for the next three weeks.

It was my first time in Japan, and the first time I had travelled that far completely on my own. Everything felt slightly foreign: the street names, the quiet pace of people heading home, the specific sound of the crossing signals.

My initial instinct was to record a video of the walk, as if I needed to log the whole neighborhood right away. But video tends to turn an experience into footage before you even have time to feel it.

I stopped and took just one still photo instead.

A video would have documented what the street looked like on a Tuesday afternoon. The still frame is the only thing that brings back how loud my own footsteps felt, and how quiet the world became around me.
